Thoughts from a Teenager

Thoughts from a Teenager

Hi, this is Jody.

I recently slowed Riley down long enough to ask him a few questions about life after the trip. I thought you might enjoy seeing and hearing directly from him.  Here is a short, little over four-minute video of Riley sharing his thoughts, then keep reading for a little more fun from Riley stuff…

What are you listening to?

  • Jack Johnson
  • John Mayer
  • Arctic Monkeys

What are your reading?

  • The Way of Zen by Alan Watts
  • The Art of Happiness by Dalai Lama
  • On the Road, The Dharma Bums and The Subterraneans by Jack Kerouac

What is next for you?

“In addition to all of the above, I finished all of my required high school classes in order to graduate in June.  I am taking a Gap Year before heading off to college.  My plans are still being finalized, but I may be spending some time in California doing some acting work and odd jobs, saving up my money and then heading off to South America to re-visit a few areas and explore countries I haven’t seen yet.  I am also going to be connecting with some of the friends we made while traveling.  My intention is to immerse myself in the culture, learn Spanish, volunteer where ever I can, busk a little, work at hostels and take some college classes online.”

As a Mom, it has been amazing watching Riley continue to mature and grow in ways I never anticipated and it has happened right before my eyes.  He has remained open to saying yes to opportunities, stayed curious and engaged and always ready to leap.

He has been asked to present his insights and share his stories of life on the road as a teenager traveling with his parents and younger sister.  If you want to hear his perspective and hire him to speak to your group our organization, connect with us here or send us an email at [email protected]

Thanks for following and as always, we love to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to post comments here or on Facebook.

Life takes courage.  Live Brave. Give Big. Have Fun.

Jody

Thanks for sharing! I came away with: explore, have fun, be spontaneous, say yes and life will be that much more rewarding; even in the small every day decisions.
My Mom saw an old friend yesterday because of ice cream… going home she spontaneously decided to treat someone. When she went back to buy the ice cream, she found a friend she had lost touch with looking for her at the store next to Yuca’s! They had a lovely chat and look forward to more!

Love that story. Thanks for sharing. Being spontaneous cultivates all kinds of fun. Tell your Mom to keep being an example for all of us to follow.

It was great seeing and meeting the lovely family ….. I enjoyed reading about your trip and experiences in your travels. I love travel and adventures, and always eager to go places and see other cultures. I enjoy most walking in the places I visit. I get to slow my pace and it opens my mind and senses to experience the culture, smell the flowers along the way, and maybe make new friends as well. I get so excited when I hear about someone’s travel, especially when they refer to it as an adventure. Our paths crossed perhaps to teach, learn, and share our experiences and passion for travel and adventure. I am like a “sponge” I like to absorb knowledge, and have fun along the way doing it, nothing teaches me more than travel.

It was so fun meeting you and your Mom. We went away smiling from our encounter. We share your enjoyment of walking. It is amazing what details you miss when all you do is drive from one place to another. So pleased our paths crossed and glad your Mom enjoyed Riley’s colorful poncho.
