The Joy of Giving

The Joy of Giving

Believe it or not, I am having so much fun giving my stuff away! It absolutely makes me smile to give someone I care about something that I love. In fact I am loving it so much that John has threatened to bolt things to the floor in case I give them away too soon.

We are downsizing in preparation for our family’s nine-month world trip.

The other day a good friend of mine stopped by to measure our large 30+-year-old jade tree I had offered her. It’s about the size of a very big chair, only taller. We were excited to find it would fit.

The 30+ year old Jade tree is preparing to move to its new home

While she was here, I asked her if she would also like to have my house plants. She left with a car full of them, with plans to share with friends and neighbors. It seems like such a small thing, but it was so fulfilling to my soul.

Just yesterday, a high school friend posted on Facebook that she needed a dining room table, chairs, and some living room furniture. Since one of the items we are actually selling is our dining room table and chairs, I shot her back a message.

As it turns out, she is not only going to buy the dining room table, but she is also going to “babysit” our beloved couches (sounds crazy, I know, but it is a long story) while we are away. We were going to put them in storage, but this is much better. My friend will have the living room furniture she was looking for, save herself some money in the next nine months, and we will know they are being enjoyed and well cared for. Such a great WIN-WIN for everyone. Plus, I get to see a friend that I haven’t seen in over 20 years.

These kinds of things thrill me to my core, and by the way, watch your in-boxes for an invite to our going away party Sunday, November 4. Besides giving us the opportunity to say good-bye, we are hoping you will help us empty our house by taking more of our stuff! So bring your trucks and come early to get the best choice. BTW, I am not just talking household stuff, the liquor and food cabinets need to be emptied as well!

It makes me happy just thinking about it.

i am in the process of downsizing, and decluttering my brain and home.. i am releasing very wonderful things for other wonderful experiences and am grateful that my mother’s broyhill will find a wonderful new home!!! i am done hoarding!!! I am a joyful giver.. I have found myself giving to strangers in need .. in the grocery line ahead of me who runs short.. at the zoo when a parent cannot afford a certain experience for their child or children.. my daughter was with me one time when this happened and she posted on facebook her response to her mom giving to a total stranger.. I don’t do well with the thank you’s afterword.. i know its appreciated from their eyes or their smiles… or me just doing the right thing. i just don’t do well with Thank you’s!

Decluttering and downsizing a great exercise and very fun IMO. How wonderful that others are benefitting from it. They are being blessed and you are making a difference in not only their lives but your daughter’s life as well as they watch you give freely being a beautiful example to others. Thanks for posting.
